1. Τι είναι η Θεματική Ανάλυση;

9. Semantic και Latent analysis

11. Worked example: Data → Codes → Theme

12. Categories και Themes

16. Χρειάζονται δύο κωδικοποιητές;

18. NVivo, MAXQDA, ATLAS.ti

23. Τι πρέπει να περιλαμβάνει η Μεθοδολογία;

Thematic Analysis in Qualitative Research: From Interviews and Coding to Theme Development and Interpretation

5 September 2026 • in-depth guide

Thematic Analysis (TA) is one of the most widely used approaches to qualitative data analysis across psychology, education, health research and the social sciences. It is more than reading transcripts and identifying recurring topics; at its strongest, it is a systematic and interpretive process for developing patterns of shared meaning in relation to a research question.

Contemporary Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), associated particularly with Braun and Clarke, treats the researcher as an active participant in the analytical process. Quality depends on coherence between the research question, theoretical assumptions, data generation, analysis and interpretation.

1. What is Thematic Analysis?

TA can be used with semi-structured or unstructured interviews, focus groups, open-ended questionnaire responses, diaries, narratives, documents and other suitable qualitative material. It is not simply a summary of what participants said.

2. Research questions come before coding

The research question shapes what becomes analytically significant. Exploring people's experiences is not analytically identical to examining how a particular meaning is constructed in discourse. Coding should therefore serve the research question rather than proceed without analytical direction.

3. Sampling and data adequacy

Qualitative sampling follows a different logic from statistical representativeness. Common strategies include purposive sampling, criterion sampling and snowball sampling. There is no universal number of interviews that automatically makes an analysis adequate; adequacy depends on the question, diversity, depth of data and scope of the study.

4. Designing the interview

Semi-structured interviews use a guiding framework while retaining flexibility for follow-up questions and prompts. Questions should be open, clear and as non-leading as possible so that participants can produce rich accounts.

5. Transcription and data preparation

Transcription is part of analytical preparation. It requires accuracy, consistency, appropriate anonymisation or pseudonymisation, secure storage and a level of detail compatible with the analytical purpose.

6. Familiarisation

Researchers read and reread the corpus, revisit recordings where useful and record early observations about repetition, contradictions, unexpected accounts and possible relationships. Familiarisation is not merely preparation for analysis; it is already part of the analysis.

7. From data to codes

Coding systematically identifies aspects of the material that are analytically meaningful. A passage about having no practical preparation for working with pupils who do not speak the local language might be coded as insufficient practical preparation, a theory–practice gap or difficulty managing linguistic diversity, depending on the research question.

8. Inductive and deductive analysis

An inductive orientation places greater emphasis on developing codes through engagement with the dataset, while a deductive orientation is more strongly informed by theoretical concepts or an existing framework. The distinction is not absolute; researchers should explain how the analysis was actually conducted.

9. Semantic and latent analysis

A semantic approach focuses more directly on expressed meanings. A latent approach examines underlying assumptions, ideologies or systems of meaning that may organise what is being said.

10. Moving from codes to themes

A code is not a theme. A theme is a broader pattern of shared meaning organised around a central analytical concept. The key question is not merely which codes look similar, but what shared meaning connects them and what they collectively tell us about the research question.

11. Worked example: Data → Codes → Theme

“When I encounter a difficult case, I usually search for solutions by myself because there is nobody at school who can guide me.”
“The training was mainly theoretical. In practice I felt that I had to improvise.”
“Colleagues help whenever they can, but there is no organised support system.”

Potential codes include independent search for solutions, absence of institutional guidance, insufficient practical training, improvisation and informal peer support.

A broader theme might be “Individually managing systemic shortcomings.” This does more than rename “lack of support”; it advances an interpretive proposition that responsibility for managing institutional difficulties is being transferred to individuals.

12. Categories and themes

Some approaches use descriptive categories between codes and themes. This can be useful organisationally, but it is not a compulsory three-level model for every form of TA. Terminology should remain consistent with the selected methodological approach.

13. Reviewing candidate themes

Initial candidate themes are rarely final. Researchers move repeatedly between codes, extracts, the entire dataset and the research question, examining coherence, distinctiveness, scope, possible mergers or splits. The process is recursive rather than rigidly linear.

14. Defining and naming themes

Labels such as “Difficulties” communicate very little. A title such as “Left to cope alone: the individualisation of professional responsibility” begins to communicate the analytical argument. Each theme needs a central organising concept, boundaries and a distinct contribution to the research question.

15. Reflexivity: the researcher is not invisible

Reflexivity recognises that researchers bring theoretical knowledge, experiences, values, professional positions and expectations to the study. In RTA, the objective is not to pretend these influences disappear, but to consider how researcher positioning participates in the production of the analysis.

16. Are two coders required?

Not necessarily. In coding-reliability approaches, coder agreement may be part of the methodological logic. In RTA, however, identical coding by independent researchers is not automatically a criterion of quality. Different forms of thematic analysis should not be mechanically combined as if they share identical assumptions.

17. Saturation requires care

Data saturation is not automatically an appropriate criterion for every qualitative methodology. If used, researchers should explain what it means in the study, how it was assessed and why it is compatible with the analytical approach.

18. NVivo, MAXQDA and ATLAS.ti

Software can assist with corpus management, coding, retrieval, memos and visualisation. It does not perform thematic analysis on behalf of the researcher. Interpretive work remains an analytical responsibility.

19. Presenting qualitative findings

A strong findings chapter is not a collection of quotations. A useful logic is Theme → analytical interpretation → illustrative extract → further interpretation → connection to the research question. Quotations provide evidence for interpretation; they do not replace analysis.

20. Findings and Discussion

The Discussion connects themes with theory, previous research, social or institutional context, implications, limitations and future research. The key question is not simply whether another study found the same result, but what the present analysis adds to understanding of the phenomenon.

21. Methodological integrity

Qualitative quality cannot be reduced to a numerical indicator. Researchers should seek coherence across research question → theoretical/epistemological position → sampling → data generation → analytical method → interpretation → claims.

22. Common mistakes

Common problems include treating interview questions as themes, converting every frequent code into a theme, equating frequency with importance, producing overly descriptive themes, inserting quotations without interpretation, omitting reflexivity, failing to explain coding, invoking saturation without justification, mixing incompatible analytical logics and claiming that themes simply “emerged” without researcher involvement.

23. What should the Methodology report?

Depending on the study: research design, theoretical/epistemological position, sampling and criteria, participant characteristics, recruitment, data generation, interview guide, interview context, recording/transcription, ethics and consent, data protection, the specific form of TA, coding and theme development, researcher reflexivity, software and procedures supporting methodological integrity.

Conclusion

Thematic analysis is not simply interviews → highlighted words → codes → “themes.” A coherent pathway is research question → appropriate sampling → rich data generation → familiarisation → systematic coding → development of patterns of shared meaning → theme review → reflexive interpretation → evidence-based presentation.
