3. Literature review, SLR και PRISMA

Doctoral thesis: from research proposal to methodology and research completion

7 September 2026 • in-depth guide

A doctoral thesis / PhD dissertation is a long-term research project expected to demonstrate originality, theoretical and methodological coherence, and a clear scholarly contribution. Moving from an initial idea to a complete thesis is easier when each stage creates a foundation for the next.

1. From idea to research proposal

The proposal clarifies the problem, research gap, aim, questions, framework, methodology and expected contribution. It is more than an approval document: it is the first map of the research architecture.

2. Research gap and originality

Originality may involve a new theoretical combination, context, dataset, methodological approach or re-examination of an unresolved relationship. The gap should emerge from critical synthesis rather than a generic claim that “few studies exist”.

3. Literature review, SLR and PRISMA

Literature mapping may be narrative, scoping or systematic depending on the question. A Systematic Literature Review requires predefined criteria, a transparent search strategy, screening, documented decisions and an appropriate synthesis. PRISMA supports transparent reporting of study selection.

4. Theoretical and conceptual framework

The theoretical framework explains the theories used to interpret the phenomenon. A conceptual framework organises constructs and expected relationships, potentially including predictors, outcomes, mediators and moderators with clear theoretical justification.

5. Methodology aligned with the questions

Design, sampling, instruments and analysis should follow from the research questions. Methodology should also address validity/reliability or qualitative rigour, ethics, data protection and limitations.

6. Analysis and interpretation

In quantitative research, the statistical strategy should be planned in relation to hypotheses. Qualitative interpretation requires a transparent analytical process and reflexivity. Mixed-methods research must explain how different forms of evidence are integrated.

7. Discussion and contribution

The discussion returns to the questions and theory, explains how findings confirm, extend or challenge previous knowledge, and states the contribution precisely. This is where the value added by the PhD becomes explicit.

Practical principle: after major revisions, re-check the chain gap → questions → framework → methodology → findings → contribution. A change in one link may require changes elsewhere.
