Research gap

Literature Review: How to Organise and Write It

29 September 2026 • practical guide

From searching and thematic organisation to critical synthesis, the research gap and connection with your study.

A literature review is more than a list of studies

A strong literature review synthesises evidence rather than summarising one paper after another. Its purpose is to show what is known, where findings converge or conflict and what remains unresolved.

Define the scope

Clarify the topic, population, context, concepts and time frame before searching. An excessively broad scope often produces a descriptive and unfocused chapter.

Search systematically enough for the purpose

Use relevant databases, combinations of keywords and transparent selection logic. A narrative literature review does not automatically require the full procedures of a systematic review, but the search should still be purposeful and defensible.

Organise by themes or arguments

Thematic organisation usually produces stronger synthesis than a study-by-study structure. Group evidence around concepts, debates, methods, populations or findings that matter to the research problem.

Write critically

Compare studies, identify methodological strengths and limitations, examine contradictions and distinguish robust patterns from isolated findings.

Develop the research gap

The gap should emerge from the synthesis. It may concern an under-studied population, inconsistent findings, a methodological limitation, a missing context or an unresolved theoretical relationship.

Connect the review to your own study

The final sections should make clear how the literature informs the research questions, conceptual framework and methodological choices of the current project.

Important: your university, programme and supervisor requirements always take precedence over a general guide.
