(Creswell & Creswell, 2018)

Ταιριάζει στη μέθοδο που μπορείτε να υποστηρίξετε;

How to Choose a Topic for an Undergraduate or Master’s Thesis

29 September 2026 • practical guide

Criteria for selecting a research topic that is interesting, feasible, focused and supported by accessible literature or data.

Start with an area, not a final title

Begin with a field that genuinely interests you, then narrow it through reading. A workable thesis topic is usually much more specific than the initial area of interest.

Check the literature early

A preliminary search helps determine whether there is enough credible literature, what has already been studied and where a meaningful angle may exist.

Make the topic researchable

A topic becomes researchable when it can be translated into a clear problem and research question. Avoid titles that merely name a broad subject without indicating what will actually be investigated.

Assess feasibility

Consider time, access to participants or data, ethical approval, software, language requirements and the level of methodological complexity. An excellent idea can still be unsuitable if it cannot be completed within the programme constraints.

Find the right level of originality

A student project does not need to transform an entire field. Originality may come from a different population, context, comparison, dataset, period, method or combination of concepts.

Discuss the idea with the supervisor

Supervisor feedback can help identify an unrealistic scope, unavailable data or a stronger theoretical direction before substantial work has been invested.

A final checklist

A strong topic is relevant, focused, researchable, feasible, ethically manageable and sufficiently supported by literature while still leaving room for a meaningful contribution.

Important: your university, programme and supervisor requirements always take precedence over a general guide.
