(Creswell & Creswell, 2018)

Research Questions and Hypotheses: How to Formulate Them Clearly

29 September 2026 • practical guide

How to turn a research problem into focused research questions and testable hypotheses.

From the research problem to the question

A strong research question grows from a clearly defined problem and the relevant literature. It should be focused enough to guide data collection and analysis, but substantial enough to support meaningful investigation.

Characteristics of a useful research question

Useful questions are clear, researchable, appropriately scoped and aligned with the study aim. Avoid questions that are so broad that no realistic method can answer them.

Descriptive, comparative and relational questions

A descriptive question asks what is happening; a comparative question examines differences between groups or conditions; a relational question examines associations between variables. The wording should match the intended analysis.

When hypotheses are appropriate

Hypotheses are common in quantitative studies when theory and previous evidence support a specific expected relationship or difference. They should identify the relevant variables and be empirically testable.

Null and alternative hypotheses

Statistical testing often distinguishes a null hypothesis from an alternative hypothesis. The research text should nevertheless remain connected to the substantive theoretical expectation rather than treating hypotheses as isolated statistical statements.

Alignment with methodology

Every question or hypothesis should have a corresponding source of data and an appropriate analysis. If the proposed data cannot answer the question, either the question or the design needs revision.

Common mistakes

Frequent problems include vague wording, multiple questions combined into one, questions that merely repeat the topic, hypotheses without theoretical grounding and a mismatch between questions and the planned analysis.

Important: your university, programme and supervisor requirements always take precedence over a general guide.
